Detrás de cada representación fi dedigna de un ser humano, los artistas Prólogo
nos dieron pistas –consciente o inconscientemente– sobre detalles que Javier
hoy solo un examen médico-forense es capaz de interpretar. Ese y no otro Sierra
es el objeto de este libro. Las bolsas bajo los ojos, el color de la piel del
modelo, la textura y densidad de sus cabellos, la forma de la mandíbula o
de los labios dan una información preciosa sobre la salud de los retratados
y, a veces, sobre aspectos de su día a día que determinaron sus decisiones
o sus méritos.
Esos rasgos son también parte del alma de la pintura, de su duende. Y
como tal, siendo invisibles para ojos inexpertos, deben ser examinados por
médicos contemporáneos tan expertos como el doctor Florencio Monje,
coautor de este estudio junto a su hermano e historiador Isidoro Monje,
que los rescatan e interpretan para nosotros...

Behind every faithful representation of a human being, artists were –cons-
ciously or not– giving us clues on details that, today, only a medical-foren-
sic examination is able to interpret. That and no other is the subject of this
book. Bags under the eyes, the skin color of the model, the texture and
density of its hair, the shape of the jaw or lips provide precious information
about the health of those portrayed, and sometimes on aspects of their
day to day that determined either their decisions or their merits.
These features are also part of the soul of painting, of its charm. And as
such, being invisible to the untrained eye, they should be examined by
contemporary physicians, with such a vast experience as Dr. Florencio
Monje, co-author of this study, along with his brother and historian Isidoro
Monje, who rescue and interpret them for us.
